Health & Safety Advisor

1st Step Solutions are supporting a multi-disciplinary MEP contractor who have an opportunity for a Health & Safety Advisor on a permanent basis based in London.

A multidisciplinary MEP contractor specialising in mechanical and electrical building services.the business has extensive experience delivering projects across data centres, commercial, education, healthcare, hospitality, retail and leisure sectors.

Role Overview:
The Health & Safety Advisor will provide professional, practical and proactive health and safety support to the company’s management, project teams, supervisors and site operatives.
The successful candidate will be a visible presence on projects, working closely with Project Managers, Site Managers, Engineers, Supervisors, subcontractors and clients to identify risks, implement effective controls and promote a positive safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide competent health and safety advice to company’s management and project teams.
• Monitor compliance with relevant UK health and safety legislation and industry best practice.
• Assist project teams in identifying significant risks and implementing suitable control measures.
• Promote a proactive approach to health, safety and wellbeing across the business.

• Carry out regular site inspections across projects
• Identify unsafe conditions, behaviours and potential areas of improvement.
• Monitor standards of housekeeping, access/egress, welfare, PPE, signage and general site safety.

• Review and provide advice on Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS).
• Assist project teams with the development of suitable safe systems of work.
• Ensure RAMS are appropriate to the work activity and communicated effectively to those undertaking the work.
• Pay particular attention to high-risk activities associated with electrical and mechanical installation.
• Support the review of RAMS when site conditions, design or working methods change.

• Ensure relevant health and safety information is communicated to company’s employees and subcontractors.

• Deliver and support site inductions, toolbox talks and safety briefings.
• Develop and deliver training on relevant health and safety topics.
• Engage directly with operatives and supervisors to encourage positive safety behaviours.

• Maintain accurate health and safety records.
• Assist with maintaining the company's health and safety documentation.
• Support internal and external audits, including client and certification audits.

Specification:
Essential

• NEBOSH General Certificate or equivalent recognised health and safety qualification.
• Demonstrable experience in a construction, MEP, electrical or engineering environment.
• Good working knowledge of UK health and safety legislation.
• Experience reviewing RAMS and safe systems of work.
• Experience investigating accidents, incidents and near misses.
• Strong understanding of construction site risks.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work confidently with site operatives, supervisors, managers, subcontractors and clients.
• Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between project sites.

Desirable

• NEBOSH Construction Certificate.
• NEBOSH Environmental Certificate.
• NCRQ or equivalent health and safety qualification.
• IOSH membership at TechIOSH/GradIOSH level or above.
• SMSTS or knowledge of site management practices.
• Experience with ISO 45001 management systems.
• Experience with ISO 9001 and/or ISO 14001.
